Doubling Down on Summer Sun Safety
As summer hits its peak, the call of the outdoors becomes irresistible, whether it's for a beach day, a week of hiking, an afternoon at the skate park, or a relaxing time by the lake. Sunscreen is a must on every packing list. A recent study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), which reviewed 1700 sunscreens, found that a quarter of them fail to meet safety standards for ingredients and effectiveness in sun protection. To help consumers, EWG has compiled a list of products that avoid certain harmful substances and provide adequate protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
To enhance your sun safety this summer, consider these tips:
- Layer Up with UPF Clothing: Invest in clothing rated with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF). Such garments are designed to block UV radiation—both UVB and UVA types. For example, clothing with a UPF of 50 allows only 2% of the sun's rays to penetrate, effectively blocking 98% and significantly reducing your exposure risk. Check out some of the performance layers we offer as an option.
- Seek Shade: Whether natural or using items like tents or umbrellas, shade can shield you from direct harmful UV rays. However, remain cautious of indirect UV rays that can bounce off reflective surfaces like sand and water, which can still pose a risk.
By integrating these protective measures into your summer routine, you can significantly reduce your risk of harmful UV exposure while still enjoying all the fun and adventure that the season has to offer. Remember, the best defense against the sun's rays is a combination of strategies—so layer up, seek shade, and keep your sunscreen handy. Here’s to a safe and spectacular summer!
